Job search update
I just applied for a job at an all-girls' high school which seeks to "empower women" by offering three levels of fashion courses, but no physics or calculus. In addition, I am starting to see a strong correlation between history teaching and sports coaching/PE teaching. Whereas I previously assumed this was just a quirk of my high school, it seems that, actually, it is a national phenomenon and that I can look forward to hobnobbing with gym teachers for the rest of my life.

Oh, this is fantastic. Years of priceless quips and complaining are guaranteed to keep us entertained now!
Rita, I hope that you get the job. I imagine many hilarious postings about the progress of students of this school as they become empowered to work in the garment industry ("I'm not sure that we can get this stain out...").
well, your last tennis coach was a history teacher, wasn't he? except that he didn't know the first thing about tennis while you do. besides, there is a stipend involved.
If you are going to attend a top tier university, you are not suppose to go into a normally distributed career field. If you wanted to be a teacher, a state university with a direction in its name would have been fine. The people who go to those schools have no chance of getting into U. of Chicago MBA program, Law school, or working in finance or consulting. So why, after going to a school that can launch you to the top tier, do you want to compete for jobs with state university types?
It's probably a rare exception...but I once had a political science teachers who was also a coach, and was one of the best teachers I had.
