Just a simple question: why are some gowns a purple/maroon colour, while others are black? Different school?

At my uni, all the gowns are black, and the school is indicated by either the colour of the hood or stole.

Rita is wearing the fetching maroon robe of a "Student Marshal," which indicates that despite Miss Self-Important's constant kvetching about her grades, she had a very high GPA by the end of winter of her 3rd year. Our uni, as you put it, doesn't have degree rankings (First Class etc.) or Latin honors and a highly inflated General Honors designation, so Student Marshal is a way of honoring the top few percent of their class with an honor no one outside the University really understands. You also get to have lunch with the University's President once in a while and help out with Convocations. In addition, at graduation, all of the graduating Student Marshals receive their diplomas last as if they were a separate part of the College.; 6/10/2007 8:55 PM
