Resolution evaluation and propagation

Ok, let's begin by recalling last year's resolutions. Except for one outstanding grad school application due in January, it seems I have once again managed to attain my desired ends. This is predictably what happens when you aim low.

Now, for the upcoming year:
1. Get into grad school.
2. Move to a decent place in autumn, if necessary.
3. Write things.
4. Go places.
5. Be not unhappy a year from now.
Optional 6. Read War and Peace.

What is the point of an optional resolution, you ask? Mostly just for the appearance of change over time, probably.

That felt good. Maybe I should start posting more to-do lists and things here for the catharsis.

Are 1 and 5 compatible?

Possibly, I guess, depending on the field, the school, and how much you love both it and the Academy.

Well, it's a resolution. We shall see.

Most people I knew liked the first year of grad school. Only the real stars were happy the last year, but then their last years were 3 or 4, instead of 5 or 6 for the ordinary slugs. But it wasn't that year 5 was intrinsically bad, as the poor souls who took 10 years to graduate were still happy at years 5 and 6.

If you plan to move to a decent place, I hope you took that into account when applying to school. I found Ann Arbor pretty depressing 20 years ago, and I can't imagine that it's gotten much better lately.

I read W&P this past year. It was great. Seriously, one of the best books I have ever read. Except for the last 20 pages or so. They sucked.

Have fun with it!
