Technological coming of age
One of the important lessons that came out of applying to grad school this year is how urgent the need to change my email address is. People at every school commented on how "cute" and "clever" dorkyglasses was. I understand that these are not insults per se, but I think they are undermining my effort to (appear to) be a mature, adult person. So from now on, my email address is my first name dot my last name at gmail dot com. You can still email me at dorkyglasses though and it will forward and I will reply from my new, adult email until you have been weaned off this habit.

Can't you just forward the one with your name to dorkyglasses? Then you can still use both.
I am. I set up my name to be able to reply from both addresses, but I can only keep up with one inbox at a time, so it will be the one with my name.
sadface! i really liked dorkyglasses.
Wait, so this means that you'll also no longer be Miss Self-Important, as your response above suggests?
No! If dorkyglasses got you into grad school, there's no good reason to get rid of it (them?).
Jennie: It had its moment.
David: Oh no, that was a fail. I will still be MSI.
Phoebe: Possibly I got in despite them?
Dear Miss S-I: Have you chosen your graduate school and program and posted the decision? If it isn't a secret, can you share that information? Thanks.
Haven't decided yet.
I had a similar thing when I graduated from college and started working -- I insisted on being called by my full name instead of a more easily pronounced nickname. I think all this is more important when you are short and/or younger than the people around you. There's plenty of time when you're old to be "cute" again.
