More grad school non-despair

Actually, it's a bit difficult to say conclusively that this essay is not an account of despair, however unbeknownst to its author, but you know, at least he doesn't think he's badly off:
"I read Rousseau and Diogenes and Thoreau, and my liberal arts education, as well as the education of living in a van, came together like two rivers meeting at a confluence and flowing together as one."

That's quite lovely. Thank you for the link.

This seemed familiar, and here's why: http://www.salon.com/2009/12/07/living_in_a_van/

But technically, this is a don't-go directed at would-be MA students.

Withywindle: Are you serious?

Phoebe: Oh, yes. I had forgotten that this happened before. So many ill-advised self-revealing essays sandwiched in between. But is it even a don't-go? For me reading it, the answer is clearly that this fellow should NOT be emulated. But he seems pleased with himself. Maybe it's a don't-go not b/c you'll be poor and sad and lonely, but b/c you will become delusional about your poverty, sadness, loneliness.

No, it's the same guy! The same photo is used! So it might not be a phenomenon, just one really self-promotingly low-maintenance dude.

And you're absolutely right that it's only a don't-go if you're not keen on van life, whatever book deal might be at the end of it.

Yes, I saw that it was the same guy, I just meant that I'd forgotten his previous foray into journalism.

MSI: Yes.

Well, to each his own, I suppose. And to some - living in a van.

Just what grad students need, a justification for making stipends smaller.

Perhaps, but only with concomitant reduction in campus parking fees. Besides, wealthy still schools will still offer more than poor ones - imagine the recruitment shill: "We'll give you a $10k/yr bonus to upgrade your van to an RV."
