Gross Pointe Blank

Funny haha, and funny that if this were to be made in 2017, it would have to be about the characters' 20-year high school reunion because 10 years after high school, most people are still living pretty much just like they were one year after high school and there are no additional social expectations to live up to.

That was pretty much already true at the time. I remember thinking that an unrealistic fuss was being made about that aspect but mostly chalked it up to either "that's the world of the film" or "the rich are different." It was already the case even in 1997 that I didn't recognize it as reality.

I saw it back then. Vaguely remember it as fun, but didn't make a strong impression. What I remembered: I'd really liked Minnie Driver in Circle of Friends, not least because she wasn't Hollywood anorexic and played the lead. Then in Gross Pointe Blanke she became anorexic too. This was dispiriting.

Well, then I guess it's nostalgia. Gross Pointe does look really rich in this movie. I'd always imagined it to be a regular upscale suburb, not a world of huge mansions.

Minnie Driver is regular-Hollywood-sized in this movie, I think? Maybe my standards are skewed.

She certainly does not dress flatteringly, fwiw. She spends half her screen time in a hideous lime green t-shirt.
